Dunarobba

Among the most interesting of the whole planet and the unique in the world: the paleontological site of the Fossil Forest of Dunarobba, to Avigliano Umbro (Terni), distant fifty km from the Farm of the Mulberries, rediscovered in the 70 during the extraction of clay in the neighbor cave used to feed the kiln. The forest doesn't guard rests of petrified plants but real trunks at the woody state. It is composed by fossil trees belonging to a giant redwood.

The exceptionality is given by the fact that the trees are fossilized in vertical position and not horizontal, as it happens in the other fossil forests. The possible explanation of this phenomenon is individualized by the researchers in the flood that could have submerged the trees maintaining them intact up to our days.

The maintenance of the trunks in position of life and the total maintenance of the characteristics of the original wood, are reasonably imputable to a continuous and gradual burial happened inside a situated marshy area on the shores of an ample lake. In the superior Pliocene, in fact, (2-2,5 million years ago) this area of Umbria was covered by the lake Tiberino around which a wide forest of conifers was developed.

The fossils have an imposing dimension: 1,5 meters diameter for a height between 5 and 10 meters. The area accessible to the public extends it to 8 hectares. The Superintendence for the Archaeological Goods of Umbria has started in 1987 the operations of guardianship and safeguard of this site through graphic, photographic and topographical survey of the area, setting the following year the prohibition of extraction and realizing provisional coverages to protect the trunks from the atmospheric agents, responsible of their degrade. Some trunks in fact are protected from "huts" holder.

In the nearness of the site the Center of Vegetable Paleontology has risen, chosen a fixed center of search and study, that also furnish an informative-didactic support at the service of the schools. A exhibition can be visited in which is proposed a reconstruction of the ancient Forest and of the faunas that populated this environment 2 million years ago.
