Castello di Sismano

An enchanting Castle, that you should absolutely visit, rises at about fifty km from the B&B the Farm of the Mulberries: the Castle of Sismano, situated in a splendid suburb from the middle Ages from Umbria, among the verdant hills, in the province of Terni, at a few kilometers from Todi and Perugia and from only 5 km from the center of Avigliano Umbro. You will see you an imposing castle that in middle Ages had an extraordinary political importance.

The castle is provided of a fortress strengthened with two semicircular towers. The Fortitude, that overhangs a dwarfish suburb and most of the surrounding necks, ownership of the princes Corsini. In 1324, at Sismano, the inhabitants of Todi had an hard clash with the inhabitants of Perugia, Narni, Spoleto and Florence. Seriously damaged, the castle, considering its strategic importance, has been subsequently strengthened in 1340. It was for a long time subject of violent quarrel between the Atti and the Chiaravalle. A wake of blood began with the decapitation of the Guelfo Catalano Atti in 1393 and continued for at least one century, up to the intervention of Alexander VI, in 1500, for the Atti, became gentlemen of Todi. But blood reappeared: Eleonora Atti, on October 14 th 1575, was killed by being stabbed by her husband Orso II Orsini.

The estate of the Castle is extended for almost thousand hectares between woods and verdant hills. A magic atmosphere winds you in the two restored buildings: one of the late middle Ages and the other of the first halves of the VII Century. The wine cellars and the stalls of the Castle now accomodate the restaurant called ‘The Two Popes’ in memory of the pontiffs that were the owners of Sismano in the past centuries.
