Pienza - Poggibonsi

From the farm-house the Hamlet of the Mulberries you can go and make a very special excursion in only one day: Pienza, Poggibonsi, Priverno. Three destinations for a memorable trip, a route that you can also undertake comfortably by motorbike, in total liberty, tasting the atmosphere and making you cheer from the surrounding panorama dominated from the valleys. Here you are in the earth of the Valley of Orcia, history, oil and wine and good cheese (Pienza is famous for her cheese), of the Val d’Elsa and Amareno.

At less than eighty km from the farm-house you will find the unforgettable Renaissance city of Pienza, in the center of the Orcia Valley, defined in the history "ideal city" or "utopian city" because the population of this earth tried to concretize an ideal model of life and government. The history of the town is linked to the name of Ernea Silvio Piccolomini also known as pope Pio II (1458). He gave his personal special touch to Corsignano: from a small suburb of the middle Ages it became a papal residence in perfect Renaissance style.

The designer of the rebirth project was Leon Baptist Alberti, called the Rossellino, that planned the Cathedral, you absolutely need to visit it with the white façade that look onto the plaza Pious II. -heart of the city - edged from the Renaissance buildings. The adjacent building at the Piccolomini’s Cathedral and the Tower with the working and precise clock are charming. For a meditative inspiration we recommend an excursion into the Romantic parish of Cordignano ( XI sec.), distant 1 1 km from the center of Pienza, where the future Pontiff was baptized.

From Pienza, you will arrive to Poggibonsi after about eighty km, it is situated on the bank of the river Hilt, in the mean of the homonym valley, it owes his name to two terms 'Poggio' and 'Bonizio.' The Podium Marturi was the native nucleus of Poggibonsi: a casteley situated near the abbey of St. Michele Arcangelo. The center of the street Francigena, was for a long time contended by Florence and Siena (from which is respectively distant 40 and 25 km) for its strategic position. In the XVI century it becomes town city but then it has to deal with the Florentine domination. Laurenzo de Medici wanted to build the Big Fortress of the Imperial Poggio.
